LA goes with Gmail
Despite cloud-related concerns from the police officers' union and privacy advocates, the City of Los Angeles is replacing many of its existing services with Google Apps, which will include its Gmail email client and Google Calendar.

A new Amazon cloud database service
Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS), the company's newest addition to the Amazon Web Services suite, allows users to create, update or import their MySQL databases in the cloud.

Force.com gets Flash-y
Salesforce.com and Adobe have partnered on Adobe Flash Builder for Force.com, which should allow Adobe Flash Player and its components to be used as tools in application development on the Force.com platform.

Price check on EC2 instances
Amazon has announced lower prices for on-demand Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances. The price cuts, effective on November 1, could go as high as 15% off.

Amazon users vent frustrations
After the customer service disaster that accompanied the Spamhaus email incident of two weeks ago, numerous Amazon users are demanding changes in how the company deals with customers. Meanwhile, experts think that these issues are nothing more than cloud growing pains.

App predicting flight delays sped along with PaaS
FlightCaster, an application development startup, needed a platform to develop its iPhone application. Their choice of Ruby-based Platform as a Service (PaaS) vendor Heroku got the app out onto phones around the world in four months.

Quicken developer inches into the cloud
Perhaps wary of offering a full-fledged cloud computing service, Intuit has announced the App Center, a Platform as a Service model integrated with the Quickbooks desktop software that is being called a "parallel to Force.com -- with a twist."

Zeus to direct Cloud Traffic
Zeus Technology is expanding its application traffic management software with Cloud Traffic Manager, which promises to bridge running applications and link IT infrastructures together at the application level.
